
You were elected as Labour MP for Rotherham at a 2012 by-election. How has the child sexual exploitation (CSE) scandal shaped your political priorities?
I came into this job because people in Rotherham did not have a voice at the time, and young women had not been listened to.
So I make sure that, as MP, I consult with people on what decisions will impact on them. The danger that comes with this job is believing you know best and not listening to constituents.
How have you seen the CSE revelations affect the local community?
At the time, it devastated the community. The number of cases of hate crime went through the roof. Young Asian women received a lot of abuse and they felt the need to defend the perpetrators.
