Careers: Special educational needs co-ordinator

Sencos help ensure children with special needs receive the right support. Jenny Cornish reports.

What does the job involve?

There is a special educational needs co-ordinator (Senco) employed by every state school in England - around 22,000 in total. The Senco might or might not have other teaching responsibilities.

The role involves managing special needs provision across the school, overseeing a team of special educational needs (SEN) teachers and learning support assistants. The Senco has an overview of all the special needs cases within the school.

They will set targets for improving the achievement of SEN pupils, identify the best teaching methods and study skills and review progress. They will liaise with teaching staff, support staff, the head teacher, the governing body and parents, as well as with other schools.
