With youth services facing significant job losses, PJ White asks what the future holds for the current generation of students studying youth work degrees.

What will youth and community work students do when public spending cuts really bite? If local authorities lose millions from their budgets and cut services to the bone, will there be jobs for newly qualified workers?

Not even the wildest optimist can imagine that the immediate future for youth services is rosy. "It feels like swingeing cuts and lots of people being made redundant," says Paul Herring, head of young people's services in the City of York. He is in desperate competition with other council services for a rapidly dwindling amount of government funding, and knows his experience is not unique.
