Care leavers get trial run in training flat

1 min read Social Care
Looked-after young people in Bournemouth are getting a taste of adult life by living in a "training flat" before they leave care.

The furnished one-bedroom flat is being leased by Bournemouth Council to let young people who feel ready to leave foster or residential care have a trial run at living on their own.

The unusual project, backed by Care Matters funding, will see 16- to 18-year-olds living in the flat for up to three weeks at a time. The young people will also get to stay there more than once to build up their experience.

Martin Taylor, service manager for children's services at Bournemouth, said: "Before the young people go in they decide the level of support they need. It depends on the young person. When they come out they do an evaluation of how it went."
