Fifteen students will undertake work with the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service in the first stage of a pilot to run in three regions - the North West, North East and Yorkshire and Humberside.
They will work alongside children's guardians in 80- to 90-day placements.
Jane Booth, Cafcass's divisional director for the North of England, said: "We employ more qualified children's social workers and more experienced social workers than any other social work agency so we felt it was important we made a contribution."
Cafcass is committed to rolling the scheme out nationally in the next two years.
