Briefing: Research report - Young carers

1 min read
Research has revealed a culture of secrecy surrounding young carers and says those who do ask for support wait far too long for it.

A report by Barnardo's has lifted the lid on the "culture of secrecy"that exists among many young carers and their families (Children Now,8-14 November).

The children's charity surveyed 1,000 teachers and discovered that 91per cent felt that many young carers had no help. It also interviewed 83young carers and found that it took an average of four years before theyreceived any support.

The report says: "The challenges that young carers face are beginning tobe recognised. But our findings show that it is still difficult for themto talk openly about their situation and to seek help. The culture ofsecrecy is strong among young carers and their families, and many youngcarers are invisible to the agencies that are there to help them."
