Nearly three quarters of English fostering services still have nostrategy for the recruitment of foster carers, according to the latestresearch on the subject. The same research also found that almost halfof services have no employee dedicated to recruitment.
The Fostering Network surveyed 78 fostering services during 2005 and2006 to get the lowdown on current practice in the recruitment andretention of foster carers. Both local authorities and independentfostering providers were examined for the study, which was funded by theDepartment for Education and Skills.
The resulting report, Improving Effectiveness in Foster CareRecruitment, was published last week. As well as highlighting the scaleof the problem, it identifies a number of issues that are critical iffostering services are to successfully recruit the foster carers theyneed.
