A forthcoming discussion paper from the Centre for the Economics of Education (CEE) is setting out a strong case for the literacy hour to be an integral part of primary school education. The paper states that the National Literacy Strategy is introducing sweeping reforms in the way literacy is taught in primary schools, and this is changing attitudes and working practices in the classroom.
The strategy was only implemented in 1998 and, until now, there has been little evidence to prove it is effective in improving reading skills.
But now the report from the CEE provides conclusive proof that the strategy is working.
