A new long-term study has discovered that early years education has a positive impact on future learning, particularly for disadvantaged children.

Joining up services to reach children at an early age will enable more disadvantaged children to get the most out of early years education, according to the author of a report that highlights the benefits of pre-school education.

The four-year study for The Effective Provision of Pre-school Education project, which has tracked the progress of more than 3,000 three- to seven-year-olds, revealed that Key Stage 1 SAT results among pupils who had early years education were higher than those who had none.

Engaging with children whose parents may be education-phobic is a real challenge, admits report author Professor Kathy Sylva, although she says that this is being addressed to some degree through schemes such as Sure Start.
