Briefing: Research report - Classroom behaviour

1 min read
Research has revealed that teachers' treatment of pupils is linked to the amount of bad behaviour in class and giving fair punishments gains respect.

How teachers treat pupils is a key factor in the amount of misbehaviourseen in class, according to young people. The finding came out of aseries of discussions with schoolchildren held earlier this year byresearchers from the Pupil Inclusion Unit at the National Children'sBureau.

The idea of the Respect in the Classroom study was to examine how therelationship between pupils and teachers influenced levels of badbehaviour.

To try and unpick the causes of misbehaviour, the researchers met groupsfrom eight English schools and asked them to discuss respect andbehaviour in class. The children and young people were clear that thedegree of respect they had for a teacher depended on several factors.Foremost among these was how fairly a teacher treated or was seen totreat them. Pupils also said that while they recognised that the teacherwas the person in charge they wanted equal treatment.
