Briefing: Research report - Black boys' education

1 min read
African Caribbean boys are falling behind at school, according to a new report. It calls for a five-year strategy to turn the situation around.

African Caribbean boys start school broadly at the same level as other pupils, but they fall further and further behind during the course of their education, a new report shows.

The study prompted London mayor Ken Livingstone to call for a third of the capital's teachers to come from ethnic minority backgrounds to help turn around the historic underachievement of Black boys in schools.

In 2003, just 2.9 per cent of teachers in London schools were Black, but the proportion of Black pupils was more than six times this level, at 19.6 per cent, revealed the report, The educational experiences and achievements of Black boys in London schools 2000-2003.
