What is a lead professional supposed to be? I remember that phrase.
The original Every Child Matters green paper said that "children known to more than one specialist agency should have a single named professional to take the lead on their care and be responsible for ensuring a coherent package of services to meet the individual child's needs".
You memorised that? I may have read it. The Department for Education and Skills has now issued draft good practice guidance explaining the role further, and providing some case studies of how they would like it to work. The lead professional is intended to act as a trusted single point of contact who is there to support children and families, and help them navigate the system. They are also going to ensure that appropriate interventions are there when needed, and that these services are planned and reviewed, and effectively delivered.
