2 mins read
Schools will be required to promote community cohesion from July this year and draft guidelines on doing so are now out.

Is multiculturalism the same as community cohesion? The concepts areinterconnected, but not the same. Multiculturalism promotes the ideathat people from different cultures can coexist in the same place, whileretaining their specific identities and pursuing their different beliefsystems. Community cohesion has gained wider credence, and is thesubject of a current Government consultation for schools in England.

Why schools? Section 38 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 placesa duty on school governing bodies to promote community cohesion, whilehaving regard to the local children and young people's plan. Schoolshave their own communities and are part of the local community. Theyalso offer an introduction to the world community through education.
