Briefing: Crib sheet - Being schooled at home

2 mins read
Parents must ensure that their children are educated, but that does not mean that they have to send them to school.

Can parents educate their children at home? Education law is prettyintricate. Under Section 7 of the Education Act 1996, parents mustensure that their children who are of compulsory school age shouldreceive efficient full-time education suitable to their age, ability andaptitude, and that any special educational needs are met, by regularattendance at school or otherwise. "Otherwise" can include homeeducation.

Can parents deliver the National Curriculum? They can with some helpfrom the local authority, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority(QCA) or parent organisations such as Education Otherwise, but they'renot obliged to. Home educators and their children can decide on thecurriculum. They don't have to follow school hours, nor do theirchildren have to take key stage tests.
