Blooming huge: Islington school wins tallest sunflower competition

Gulash Osku shows off the Russian Giant sunflower that helped her school win a sunflower growing competition.

The competition, which saw schools in Islington, north London, try togrow the tallest sunflower, aimed to help the children learn aboutbiology. Children from the New North Community School won thecompetition after their sunflower reached a height of 185cm. The schoolwas given a wormery to help decompose organic waste as a prize. MaryMcStay, head teacher at the primary school, said: "The project was a wayfor the pupils to learn all about science and nature while making apositive difference to our school environment." The children at theschool said their success was down to giving their sunflower lots ofwater and compost and building a slug and snail barrier.
