BIG INTERVIEW: The Eton of the working class - Danny Webb, clubdirector, Hunslet Club for Boys and Girls, Leeds

3 mins read

The voice belonged to Danny Webb, the 46-year-old director of Hunslet Club for Boys and Girls who for 12 years guided Robinson through his sporting life.

It was at Hunslet that Leeds-born Robinson first picked up a rugby ball.

Webb says: "Jason Robinson is an example of good youth work practice. He relied on us for support, and we gave it."

In his recent autobiography, Robinson wrote: "The club gave us an outlet for the energy kids have to burn. I don't know what I would have done without it in the evenings and at weekends."

Robinson visited Webb just weeks before he flew out with the England squad, arriving unannounced one afternoon to play table tennis and rugby with the young people and serve tea and coffee.
