BIG INTERVIEW: Support from the sidelines - Evan Bryson MBE, club secretary, Redheugh Boys Club

Each spent his formative years honing his skills for a career in football as a member of the long-established Redheugh Boys Club in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

Another thing they have in common is Evan Bryson. Appointed MBE in the New Year Honours list for his services to young people (YPN, 7-13 January, p5), Bryson has been a volunteer youth worker and secretary at the club since 1957. Now on the verge of turning 75, he still holds a passionate interest in the club's progress, and is actively campaigning to get it new premises.

"We have always been waiting in the wings for premises as they are hard to get for voluntary groups," says Bryson. Problems with premises have dogged the former boxing club, which has moved four times since its beginnings in 1956. The club is now between premises.
