(ODPM), part of his role is to oversee the neighbourhood warden scheme, which aims to combat antisocial behaviour at its grass roots. And he donned a uniform himself for 23 years as a firefighter with the London Fire Brigade.
Unsurprisingly, he is enthusiastic about the fire service's potential to support young people.
"The service is going through a major change to be more engaged in youth interaction," he says. "There are many schemes that run youth interventions, such as one in Cheshire that engages young offenders through the youth offending team. Some 73 young people have been through the scheme and I believe only one has reoffended since."
