But wealth surveys such as these only serve to disguise the true cost of deprivation that mars many parts of Sheffield. And according to Jim Reid, chief executive of Sheffield Futures, this means that, in terms of attracting government funding, the real needs of the city are often overlooked.

However, a move to establish Sheffield's youth, careers and Connexions services as one organisation with a charitable status has helped to overcome some of the funding issues for young people's services. As this umbrella organisation, Sheffield Futures has been able to attract funding from outside sources including lottery grants in ways that local authority and private sector providers cannot.
