Big interview: Local voice benefits young - Gill Stanford, children's commissioner, Staffordshire County Council

It all started when she was a 19-year-old graphic designer waiting for a kitchen centre to be built to provide her first job. She saw the job of an assistant house parent at a children's home advertised and decided to apply for it to fill a three-month gap. She soon realised the kitchen centre was not to be.

"I felt I could make a difference in this role," she said. "It was exciting, every day was different. The young people had such difficult times and it was almost a privilege to work with them. I just knew this is what I was supposed to be doing."
