Big interview: Empowerment in action Emily Scott, attendee, Bookham Youth Centre

3 mins read

The Surrey village of Bookham looked set to lose its only youth club as the county council prepared to shut down 18 clubs in order to build three larger youth centres - and save 255,000 (YPN, 22-28 February, p3).

Emily, unimpressed, campaigned to save the centre, with the help of the community.

She has written to councillors and MPs, got more than 700 signatures on a petition, and appeared in her local newspaper to drum up support.

Other young people across Surrey have taken part in similar campaigns to save their own youth clubs, and their action seems to have worked for now: the council has announced that plans are being revised and it is looking at different solutions for individual centres and clubs. For Bookham, it is proposing an "increased role for the community in running the centre".
