BIG INTERVIEW: Church must help the young - Reverend Les IsaacAscension Trust Street Pastor Initiative

There has been no shortage of initiatives from all sorts of community groups to tackle the problem, with one notable exception: churches. Once the bastion of youth work, the Church has long been criticized for its lack of engagement with the most disaffected young people. In these lawless times, it is easy to believe the British religious communities would prefer to keep talking to people who are willing to listen rather than venturing out to those who are not.

Yet this is precisely what they must do to help to combat gun violence and positively re-engage young people into society, according to Reverend Les Isaac of church leader training organisation the Ascension Trust. Street Pastors, an initiative launched in Brixton, south London, last week by the Trust, is aiming to do just that.
