Then he got a call from a youth worker inviting him to help create a mural with ex-offenders and other teenagers in the Hampshire town of New Milton, and he hasn't looked back since.
"Volunteering has changed me as a person," says Ed, now a 20-year-old student. "I used to be terribly shy but it has boosted my confidence and respect for my fellow man. I'm able to liaise with anyone from age 12 to 45, and people of all different professions."
Ed has just become one of the 20 young people on the new-look board of youth volunteering charity v. The charity was launched last May to inspire more 16- to 25-year-olds to become volunteers.
