Bichard champions child participation

Children should be more involved in school interview panels, says Sir Michael Bichard.

In his report on the Soham case, he recommended child protection training for head teachers and charged the DfES with ensuring there was one trained person on each interview panel in the near future.

But he went further in an interview with Children Now and said children should play a role, after hearing evidence from the NSPCC on how interviews could be improved.

He said: "One really radical proposal, which I've always quite liked, is why on earth don't we involve children more? Actually, children are pretty good at sensing if there's some problem."

Pupils at Aspinal Primary in Tameside, Greater Manchester (Children Now, 26 May - 1 June), have already interviewed candidates for teaching posts.
