
Latest Office for National Statistics figures show there was a five per cent drop in the number of 16- to 24-year-olds unemployed between October and December last year. For many, this would be an encouraging sign that the scourge of youth unemployment – hovering around the one million mark for more than two years - is finally showing signs of easing.
But for a group of experts, recently gathered together for a debate on the issue by think-tank Big Blue, the figures mask fundamental problems with the way the education system prepares young people for the world of work.
The experts' key concern is the apparent lack of accountability for pupil outcomes beyond the education system.
