For several months, experts have been calling for schools to be made more accountable for pupils' employment outcomes in a bid to improve youth job prospects.
Now, new statutory guidance, published by the Department for Education earlier this month, extends schools' careers advice duties, making them more accountable for pupils' post-16 destinations (see below).
Most notably, when the measures take effect in September this year, schools will be required to create opportunities for all 13- to 18-year-olds to be mentored by local employers.
The guidance recommends that they use initiatives such as Business in the Community and Inspiring the Future to forge links with local businesses.
