BestPractice: Babysitting Skills Surrey offers babysitting course for young people

1 min read
At a time when the economic climate demands that we all have to be more enterprising, the Surrey County Council youth development service in Guildford has set up a babysitting course that has created a real buzz among young people and benefits local families too.

A six- to eight-week babysitting course is being delivered at the Discovery Centre in Guildford on Thursdays as part of the Twilight after-school club programme. It was introduced when youth workers learned that young people were being asked or were keen to babysit but lacked confidence and worried about how they might deal with any emergencies that could arise.

Throughout the course, young people have been trained on how to deal with different scenarios that could occur: how to identify signs and symptoms of illness in young children; basic first aid and health and safety; and relevant areas of child protection law. The youth team has even invested in an electronic baby that group members can take home overnight to give them a real sense of the demands of the job.
