I got involved in a four-week project to work with the elderly residents at Nightingale House in South Clapham. It was an initiative of Hand in Hand - run by the Jewish Lads and Girls Brigade - and the web site www.movinghere.org.uk. Hand in Hand youth workers came to our school and asked if we were interested in volunteering. The idea was to talk to the elderly residents about their experiences of moving to England and write about our own experiences.
I moved to London from Paris when I was nine, and I was paired with a Jewish lady from Bombay. At the beginning we thought it would be awkward but we really enjoyed it. Now they are planning a residential project.
