Behind the Inspection Rating: Steely determination to improve

How Greenhill Village Pre-school has gone from "good" to "outstanding".

Greenhill Village Pre-school, Sheffield - Early years inspection - December 2014

Greenhill Village Pre-School is in a celebratory mood. Ofsted has upgraded it from "good" to "outstanding", a change that manager Gill Bilby puts down to the setting's focus on evaluation.

"It's all about self-evaluation really, constantly looking at how you can make it better," she says. "It doesn't always have to be a big change. It's the culmination of small changes that makes a big difference."

Even something as simple as tweaking the timetable to allow more time for outdoor play can help. "We found that we were bringing children in to do, say, singing and it was interrupting their play outside," says Bilby. "So we changed that so the outdoor play is extended and put singing somewhere else. It's a minor change but it made a big difference."
