A typically thought-provoking challenge. But wait. What's this? In a letter in last week's New Statesman, the wordly wise Wylie called for "significant investment in preventive youth work".

So how come youth work needs qualifying by "preventive"? Why can't young people have youth work - unadorned, pure and simple?

Fire minister Angela Smith has her hose trained on young people. She's launched a new drive to cut the level of fire-related youth crimes - such as arson, hoax calls and attacks on firefighters.
