Back Page: Social Claire - Reach beyond the headlines

Claire is relieved that people see through bigotry and keep giving.

As I write, the current Comic Relief effort has amazingly raised more than 40m, thanks to all those who really pulled out the stops on Red Nose Day.

This year it felt bigger than previous events. On the day itself, we had kids at work baking sponge cakes with the obligatory red sweet perched on top. They then changed into fancy dress and did a tour of all the local authority buildings, selling the cakes as they went. The atmosphere was great, and I laughed later when visiting the local social services office.

There were witches, pirates and a dodgy looking Humpty Dumpty, all doing sponsored activities.
