Claire is called on when flu threatens to ruin a Christmas party.

I talked in my last column about some of our looked-after childrenmissing their parents at Christmas (Children Now, 6 December 2006-9January 2007). So we decided to make sure our gang had the best party wecould give them.

The planning was like a military operation; donated presents weredistributed among party bags and our centre was decorated with tinsel, tree and sparkling lights. We even booked someone to do a Santa turn andhe was due to arrive halfway through the evening.

The children arrived, all decked out in their best clothes and reallyexcited. Some had made necklaces out of tinsel, someone had FatherChristmas deely boppers on her head, the girls had glittery eye shadowand the lads smelt of pre-Christmas aftershave. It reminded me that whatis a simple thing for us as adults means an awful lot to ourchildren.
