Back Page: My Festive Fortnight - Swedish festivities and predictions for 2008

Friday 21 December: My pre-recorded debate with Sun columnist Jon Gaunt on the wisdom of "zero tolerance" is shown on Tonight with Trevor McDonald.

I'm not pleased with my performance: I let Gaunt rant unchallenged. If he had his way Britain would be like Singapore: wonderfully clean, uncreative and repressive - one big shopping mall backed up by a huge prison population.

I don't stay in for the programme but watch it later on video. Instead I am listening to Handel's Messiah performed by a local choir and orchestra. Terrific.

Monday 24 December and Tuesday 25 December: My wife is Swedish, so for us Christmas Eve is the big day. The tree comes in and is dressed at the last moment. We have an open house during the day for the drinking of glogg (mulled red wine with schnapps).
