We all know that youth work, like most things in life, is best enjoyed in moderation. But just how much is too much? It's a tricky question, especially when you're working with young people who have a very limited choice of other things to do.

So for a while now I've been avoiding answering the question directly. Instead I went for the softer option that involves using the word "appropriate" as many times as possible.

You know the sort of thing: attendance should be managed appropriately and not exceed an appropriate number of hours.

Confused? I think we all were. Meanwhile, some young people were in and out of our clubs and projects up to five times a week. There was nothing else for it but to set a magic number. After some debate, we went for three. Three sessions, or around nine hours a week to be precise. And that's your lot.
