Welcome to a very bunged-up, feverish and sore-throated Last Word, this week brought to you in association with a couple of sachets of Lemsip and a packet of Strepsils.

You see, despite my very best efforts to avoid it, I've gone down with the dreaded lurgy. And it's knocked me for six. The flu season is now in full swing and it seems you can run but you can't hide.

Having a heavy cold or the flu is certainly miserable. And like most people I'd much rather be at work. But why does the whole experience seem to be made much worse by a number of factors that conspire to maximise the discomfort?
