BBC One's early evening magazine programme The One Show asked whether young women had become more violent and if alcohol was to blame.

But presenters Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley probably didn't bargain for guest Maureen Lipman's solution to binge drinking - encouraging young people to smoke instead. She was worried by young women's drinking habits but claimed smoking was a lesser evil and should become acceptable in public again. "We fought for equal rights but we have just inherited the worst traits of men," she said.

"This is a bad thing. Girls go out drinking and wearing virtually nothing. They are like highly coloured insects looking not just for a drink but a good seeing-to. I think we should let them smoke. It's very calming to smoke."
