The story of 21-stone Damien Hall, apparently judged "too fat to adopt", generated tons of headlines, comment and debate. Many asked whether Leeds City Council's adoption panel was right to turn down Hall and his wife Charlotte as adoptive parents.

"The issues here are complex," wrote Kevin Williams, chief executive of The Adolescent and Children's Trust, in The Telegraph. "The Halls have not been judged unfit in terms of their parenting skills. However, it is absolutely appropriate that any applicant hoping to adopt is assessed for their abilities as well as their health, in order to ensure they can provide care not only now, but long into the future."

Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, told The Sun children needed good role models and those with one obese parent were three times more likely to be overweight. "The figure rises to eight times more likely if both parents are obese," he continued. "Mrs Hall does not look like she needs to lose weight so that is in the couple's favour." No doubt the Halls will be grateful for that.
