It's been a tricky week for Children's Secretary Ed Balls - or "Witchfinder Balls" as he was branded by Melanie Phillips in The Spectator.

Claims that one in six state schools breach the admissions code - following a survey of schools in Northamptonshire, Manchester and Barnet - have prompted both concern and indignation.

"Headteachers have branded the government pathetic for creating a storm in a teacup," reports the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, which spoke to local school heads. On top of the admissions row much is made of the fact the headteacher at Balls' children's school had quit. "The school is facing criticism from inspectors over its poor standards, something which will come as an embarrassment to Mr Balls, who has repeatedly claimed Labour is taking tough action to turn around failing schools," says the Daily Telegraph.
