"It is to the Government's credit that they have listened to Sun readers." That was the generous verdict of the Sun newspaper as it applauded itself for a new piece of legislation.

Its attitude towards the Bill was summed up in a headline: "The Sun nails child killers" along with the good news that "We help NSPCC close legal loophole".

It was referring to the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act. This created a new offence of causing or allowing the death of a child. In the past prosecutions were difficult when it wasn't clear which one of a small number of people in a household actually caused a child's death.

The Sun saluted Charles Clarke's decision to bring in a new law, claiming that ministers were spurred into action after 10,000 readers signed a petition run jointly by The Sun and the NSPCC.
