So what do you do? My job is to manage the whole course, including the four-strong tutorial team, administration, meeting my tutor group, planning course materials, strategic planning, teaching, personal tuition and marking coursework. In addition to all that, I liaise with the university and meet youth organisations with regard to placements.
Who do you teach? Mainly trainee youth workers who work for church or Christian youth organisations or local authorities. They are mostly people in their early twenties who already have some experience of youth work, which is a requirement of the course.
What got you the job? I have a degree in youth and community work and I worked previously for the Oasis Trust's project arm helping socially excluded young people. I then left for two years to do a job training learning mentors and then, because I wanted to carry on teaching, I took up an assistant teaching position at Oasis. I still do some project work as I believe passionately that those who teach it should also work at it.
