A new report by the National Children's Bureau says innovative use of the curriculum can help by breaking down myths about the plight of asylum seekers.
It adds: "More schools need to consider ways to challenge misconceptions and aid a more balanced view of asylum and refugee issues so that pupils can feel safe in their schools."
The report also stresses the importance of local authority central refugee education teams.
And it recommends that local authorities should collect detailed statistics on the educational attainment of school-aged asylum seekers. This would enable schools to review current practice and share good practice across the authority and with other authorities.
