Government failing to protect asylum-seeking children

A damning report into the treatment of asylum-seeking children has revealed "extensive bad practice" in the UK Border Agency.

The report, by Refugee and Migrant Justice, formerly the Refugee Legal Centre, which provides legal advice and representation to asylum seekers and other migrants, said children are regularly locked up and left without adult support.

In January, the government published the UK Border Agency Code of Practice for keeping children safe from harm, in which it asserts: "Every child does matter, as much as if they are subject to immigration control as if they are British citizens."

But the report, entitled Does Every Child Matter, states that breaches of the code are already occurring and concludes that the government is failing in its commitment to protect vulnerable children.
