The No Place for a Child campaign was launched by charities including Save the Children and the Refugee Council earlier this year (YPN, 29 March-4 April, p6). Two All-Party Parliamentary Groups, on children and refugees, will release a report into alternative detention methods at the meeting.
Quarterly statistics on children in detention were due to be released on 23 May. Rhona Blackwood, assistant programme director for England at Save the Children, said: "Our research shows more than 2,000 children are detained a year." An early day motion launched by Labour MP Neil Gerrard calling for the ending of detentions had received 93 signatures as YPN went to press.
