Question: I'm working with a young man who is very overweight. He wants to get fit but says he struggles because of significant caring responsibilities at home. How can I help him?
Jeanie Lynch: Young carers are entitled to a proper assessment under the new Children and Families Act. If his caring role has not yet been recognised then this is a first step to ensuring he gets the support he needs.
It's important to take a whole family approach. Speak to your local young carers service or Common Assessment Framework co-ordinator to find out how to ensure the needs of this young man and the person he is caring for are being met.
