Ask the Expert: An emigrating friend

1 min read Youth Work

One of our youth club’s families is emigrating to Australia. The kids are sorry to see them go, but are excitedly making plans to visit. I’m fearful that the costs of flights will make their plans impossible. Should I encourage them?

Encouraging them can be positive for many reasons. It is lovely that they can feel good about the idea of one of their friends going so far away. They can keep in touch via email, Skype or snail mail. They can also keep up to date with photos and regular chats. Some really strong relationships may remain intact.

Regarding the costs of travel, you could ask the young person emigrating to identify a nearby youth project – a way of encouraging them to settle in and a possible link that you could follow up. You could develop a positive working relationship with an organisation in Australia that could lead to youth exchanges, life-long friendships and plenty of long-haul travel for years to come.
