Ask the Expert: Trustee recruitment

1 min read Management Youth Work

We are recruiting new members to the board of our youth provision and I am organising an open day. I have been asked to invite as many of the "socially excluded" as I can to impress the wealthy applicants, but I am not comfortable with this.

Sadly, it is a fact of life that funding for run-of-the-mill youth work is all too often difficult to articulate and make attractive to funders. That said, having affluent trustees is a real bonus if they are likely to make donations as well as draw in their wealthy friends and colleagues.

Without wishing to appear too cynical, it might be that your invitees will expect to see the multi-fathered families of young women who lack aspiration in order for them to feel they are making a difference. But try and resist the urge – trustees are for life, not just for open days. Show them the reality of what you do rather than pander to fantasy.
