A project in Lewisham is using the music industry to encourage young people to develop business skills. Andy Hillier looks at what it has achieved so far.

As self-styled label manager, Idris believes it's crucial to talk up the track before its release. It is one of the key lessons he's learned over the past year at LIVE Recordings, a spin-off music and business project based in Lewisham, southeast London, run by the organisation that set up LIVE magazine in Brixton. Although not strictly about music, the project uses the subject as the hook to get young people aged 17 to 21 from deprived parts of Lewisham interested in learning about business skills and the music industry.

Project manager Mark Gurney explains: "A lot of the young people are at college but come from an area where there aren't traditionally many opportunities. The project is designed to expand their horizons and teach them skills that could help get them a job."
