Potential recruits can currently only apply to enlist once any period ofprobation or licence has been completed.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed this could beset to change as part of a scheme that bids to reduce reoffendingthrough employment.
"The MoD and the Ministry of Justice are together examining whether thearmy, alongside other employers, can contribute to the government'sreducing reoffending agenda by training and recruiting offenders," thespokesman said.
"It is estimated that employment reduces the risk of reoffending bybetween a third and a half."
Major Ian McCormack, army liaison officer for the Prince's Trust, saidthe policy is not likely to be adopted in the near future due to arecent surge in recruitment.
