Aged 19, James Chester had managed to take up a year 10 place at a secondary school using a fake birth certificate and a letter of support. It was three weeks before staff worked out how old he really was and had him removed. A year later, Chester tried to join another school but this time background checks uncovered his real age.
He continued to wear a school uniform and hang around with children before targeting his victim and her family over a six-month period. Chester befriended the victim's brother at first, apparently playing computer games with him and riding bikes together.
