Apprentices get financial support

Education
Young people who take up apprenticeships will be entitled to apply for a university-style grant of at least 3,000, the Prime Minister has announced.

For a high-cost sector such as engineering they would be entitled to up to £15,000.

Speaking at the University of Greenwich last week, Gordon Brown set out his vision for education. "We will offer financial support to those who could not otherwise afford to stay in education. But we will not insist that young people stay in the classroom," he said.

The Learning and Skills Council will also have a new legal duty to provide sufficient apprenticeship places.

Gemma Tumelty, president of the National Union of Students, welcomed the government's commitment. "It is vital that those who could not otherwise afford to stay in education are supported, regardless of the educational route they take," she said.
